Steaks

When feeling peckish, ones options in town are limited. If not deadly dull.

Steak restaurants Chichester

Even if it is just a toasted cheese you are after, at three thirty on a wet Monday afternoon.

I tried three different restaurants in South St and each time it was the same. “Terribly sorry but the kitchen is closed.”

Eventually I wound my down to The Fat Fig. Kacper Osmola was adamant that they do the best breakfast in Chichester so it was worth a try.

Whilst there are sandwiches on the menu, there was no mention of toasties. Instead I decided to splash out. Their kitchen was open. So why not try the sirloin steak?

It was good.

Worth going back to have another look in the evening.  When they offe a varied interesting menu, as well as a 300g steak.

Bigger and just as good. I would have preferred garlic butter and sauted potatoes. But one does have a choice of peppercorn or mushroom sauce and it is served with traditional French fries.

Calamari Chichester

To start we ordered calamari rings . A pleasant meal and good excuse to try the rack of lamb and kleftiko next time.

Local crafts

With a few exceptions most of the stalls at the local markets I have found have been dull and uninteresting.

Craft markets in Chichester

Which was why I stopped to talk to Jib Hagan. No ways he is going to earn any awards for the design and presentation of his stall.

Recycling waste plastic Chichester

But what he lacked in the way of shelter from the elements he made up for with enthusiasm and passion.

Hand woven bags using recycled plastic waste.

It’s a little ironical when you stop to think how recycled plastic waste ends up back on the street, in a stall being sold into the market and the journey taken to get here.

I suspect nouvelle cuisine but I am way out of my depth when it comes to what is and what is not.

Tea rooms in Chichester Vintage tearoom

Keep an eye on the Exclusive Cake Shop & Vintage Tearoom. From time to time they offer Koeksisters or Koeksusters as they are known in South Africa. They are a traditional Cape Malay confectionery made of fried dough infused in syrup or honey. Koeksisters are prepared by frying plaited dough strips in oil, then submersing the hot fried dough into ice cold sugar syrup. They have a golden crunchy crust and liquid syrup centre, are very sticky and sweet, and taste like honey.

The Vintage Tearoom is both gluten free and vegan friendly offering a comprehensive range of cakes, confectionery and speciality teas.
